Federal research shows people are driving more --  the average miles driven per year is on the rise --  and more motorists on the road means more accidents. The cost to repair newer model cars with high-tech safety devices and sensor technology is also increasing, as are medical costs for injuries. And don’t forget about the hurricane and hail damage from recent severe weather storms. Insurers are passing on some of these higher expenses to you in the form of higher car insurance rates to recoup their losses.
Defensive driving classes go beyond the basics taught in driver’s education by having motorists learn how to drive in hazardous conditions, anticipate dangerous situations and avoid accidents. The best part? The cost is usually only $25 to $75 and you’ll typically snag a discount of five to 15 percent for three years.  Note, however, that insurer and state law requirements for these discounts vary a great deal. For example, 21st Century Insurance offers a discount to drivers under the age of 21 who take a state approved defensive driver course but with Esurance the discount is not age-based and is available to all drivers in New York, New Jersey, North Dakota, Georgia and Oklahoma.
With Nationwide, there are lots of ways to protect your teen while staying within your budget. For example, a higher auto insurance deductible may lower the rate, but could mean more out-of-pocket expenses after an accident. If the vehicle is older or has very high mileage, liability coverage may be a better option than collision or comprehensive – though it will not cover damages to the car after an at-fault accident. Getting the right coverage that best fits your needs is important for saving money on your teen auto policy. Learn more about Nationwide’s auto insurance coverage types today.
Example: You cause an accident with another driver who has three passengers in her car. If you have liability insurance, you are covered against any bodily injury claims filed by the driver or her three passengers up to the limits of your policy. So if your per person bodily injury limit is $25,000 and your per accident bodily injury limit is $50,000, your policy will pay at most $25,000 to cover the bodily injury claims of any one of the four people in the struck vehicle but only up to $50,000 in total for all bodily injury claims resulting from the accident.

Liability insurance protects you against the claims of other drivers for their injuries or damage to their vehicles in the event that you cause an accident, up to the limits of liability in your policy. Most states require that drivers have liability insurance up to certain minimum limits, and SafeAuto has specialized in helping drivers meet those requirements for over 20 years.
However, the difference between the car insurance rates paid by men and women changes substantially with age. We sampled quotes for different drivers and found that 20-year-old women pay 16%—or about $55 per month—less for car insurance than 20-year-old men. However, by age 32 the relationship flips and men paying $6 less per month than women do for car insurance.

For most drivers, male and female car insurance rates are very similar: women pay $740 for a 6-month policy compared to the $735 paid by male drivers, on average. For young drivers, however, it's a different story. Men under the age of 25 pay an average of 10% more per year for car insurance than do women in the same age bracket. We'll explore the reasoning behind this discrepancy and review some easy ways to save when shopping for your next policy.

Some insurers let you save money if you're affiliated with a certain organization or professional group. Sometimes it's based on a perk a group, like your employer or union has specifically negotiated with the company. Other times, you simply get a discount for working in a specific profession. For example, GEICO offers discounts to members of the Society of Women Engineers. Ask your insurance company what group or professional discounts you might be eligible for.

In the states with no-fault insurance, insured drivers are typically paid for medical expenses by their own insurers, regardless of who caused the accident. Nonetheless, BI liability coverage is still required in no-fault states because if injuries are bad, the at-fault driver may be sued by the injured party. If that happens, your BI coverage can help cover your liability expenses.

Example: Suppose you rear-end the driver in front of you at a stoplight. No one is hurt but there is damage to both cars. If you have a car insurance policy with liability limits of $25,000/$50,000/$25,000, your insurance company will pay up to $25,000 for damages to the other driver’s car if a claim is filed. If the damage is more than $25,000, you will be personally liable for paying the rest.
